When I was in kindergarten, my teacher gave the entire class a simple assignment:
draw a self-portrait.
Most of the drawings looked exactly as you might expect from six-year-olds—four gangly lines for arms and legs extending from a large circular head.
When it was my turn to share, my classmates stared in amazement. I had included something many of them had left out entirely: a torso. It was a small detail, but it changed everything. I did not have the words to understand that moment then. I only knew that we had all been given the same assignment, yet one drawing made people look more closely.
